MARCH BOOK CLUB: “The Cafe on the Edge of the World: A Story About the Meaning of Life”

We recently had the pleasure of reading “Cafe on the Edge of the World” by John Strelecky. The month of March has been focused on travel and we felt this book was a great compliment to the stories we have heard by the amazing women this month who are fulfilling their life’s purpose through travel.

Cafe on the Edge of the World tells the story of a man who, similar to the Alchemist, embarks on a journey of self-discovery. He finds a cafe in the middle of nowhere and the proprietor asks him three simple questions: Why are you here? Do you fear death? And are you fulfilled?

These questions cause the protagonist to reflect on his life and he realizes that he is not living to his fullest potential. He begins to make changes in his life and embarks on a journey to find his purpose.

We enjoyed this book and found it to be a quick read. We would definitely recommend it to our friends and followers as a book that will make them pause and think about their own life.

Key takeaways:

  1. Something is fulfilling because we determine it to be and not because someone else tells us it is fulfilling.
  2. We can eliminate our fear of death by living the life we want with fewer regrets instead of busying ourselves to survive and prepare until the day we retire.
  3. If we’re not focused on our goals, distractions will deplete our time and energy and we miss desired opportunities.
