Focus on Social Justince

SAMANTHA ALVAREZ BENOWITZ, LCSW IS THE DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL SERVICES AT THE NEW YORK SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN (NYPCC). MS. ALVAREZ BENOWITZ HAS CLOSE TO 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH UNDERSERVED CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN NEW YORK CITY AND PHILADELPHIA. PRIOR TO WORKING AT THE NYSPCC, MS. ALVAREZ BENOWITZ WAS THE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING AT COVENANT HOUSE NEW YORK, THE LARGEST YOUTH SHELTER IN NEW YORK CITY AND HELD CLINICAL AND MANAGERIAL ROLES AT GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICES, A FOSTER CARE AGENCY BASED IN NEW YORK CITY. MS. ALVAREZ BENOWITZ HOLDS A BACHELOR OF ARTS IN  PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY FROM BOSTON COLLEGE AND A MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA.​

This month we would like to highlight a few of our friends who are out there being the change they would like to see in the world. 

October 6th, our interview with Samantha Alvarez Benowitz drops on the Chasing Brighter Podcast. Samantha is the Director of Clinical Services at NYSPCC.  

Established in 1875, The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) was the first child protection agency in the world. Throughout its distinguished history, The NYSPCC has sought to develop and implement innovative mental health, legal and educational programs that protect children from harm and ensure their healthy development.

Would you like to be the change?

Here are a few simple strategies to working toward being an activist. 


1. Pick a cause.

Identify your personal values and explore organizations that align with these personal beliefs. You can find something that feels personal to you. Think about your own life experiences and personal history.  Is there a memory that resonates with you?

2. Educate yourself.  Expose yourself to media and literature about the topic you are passionate about.

Follow leaders on social media.

Read a book. 

Watch documentaries.


 3. Join a Local Group.

Take action.

  • Create awareness with social media.  You can make a difference utilizing modern technology, like text messaging, blogging, Twitter, and Facebook, to help bring about social change.
  • Raise money
  • Volunteer in community Service
  • Donate money to causes you care about
  • write letters
  • sign petitions.
